Farbenindustrie and their BASF division to handle chemical experimentation.<sup data-fn=\"f00fe350-d12a-49b7-8a16-08cbffb65c66\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#f00fe350-d12a-49b7-8a16-08cbffb65c66\" id=\"f00fe350-d12a-49b7-8a16-08cbffb65c66-link\">3<\/a><\/sup> Together, AEG and BASF produced their first magnetic phonograph, or \u201cMagnetophon,\u201d in 1934, and debuted it at the 1935 Berlin Radio Exhibition.<sup data-fn=\"cbea5580-b078-4c7a-af7e-f57df457b9ab\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#cbea5580-b078-4c7a-af7e-f57df457b9ab\" id=\"cbea5580-b078-4c7a-af7e-f57df457b9ab-link\">4<\/a><\/sup> As the Magnetophon began to hit the market and made its way into German broadcasting studios, the Wehrmacht began to also adopt the technology for their \u201cPropaganda Corps\u201d and other various usage cases.<sup data-fn=\"bad550bf-80cf-4f5f-8681-6395efabf8eb\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#bad550bf-80cf-4f5f-8681-6395efabf8eb\" id=\"bad550bf-80cf-4f5f-8681-6395efabf8eb-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> AEG, BASF, and the Wehrmacht continually improved upon the design of the Magnetophon as well as continually developed better magnetic tape formulas, specifically PVC coated tape, which became a German standard for many years after World War 2 ended.<sup data-fn=\"62242a28-bab7-4e1d-aed9-16c3094c09a0\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#62242a28-bab7-4e1d-aed9-16c3094c09a0\" id=\"62242a28-bab7-4e1d-aed9-16c3094c09a0-link\">6<\/a><\/sup> Despite the vast improvements in magnetic tape technology in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s, the technology remained very localized until the end of the war. US Army Signal Corps Captain James Menard wrote an assessment of the Magnetophon and its specifications in a 1946 report following their discovery in post-war Germany. In this report, Menard highlights the \u201cexcellent performance\u201d of the Magnetophon, and lauds the \u201cdesign and quality\u201d of the tape drive system.<sup data-fn=\"012e8277-e556-474a-8b37-51db68af7826\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#012e8277-e556-474a-8b37-51db68af7826\" id=\"012e8277-e556-474a-8b37-51db68af7826-link\">7<\/a><\/sup> In context with other magnetic tape recording devices from other countries, the Magnetophon represented an important step forward in tape technology. Menard went as far to surmise that:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-container-core-quote-is-layout-392a834b wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-right:0;margin-left:0;padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">The performance already achieved in the Magnetophon equipments in service, improved by the advances under development, leave little to be desired in a sound recording system.
