Mix-tapes are compilations of songs recorded onto a cassette, creating a personal playlist of songs rather than only listening to a certain album. This transformed the way we consume and share music. An example can be found in an article from an Indiana newspaper, the Ball State Daily News, from 1985, which shares with the local community that a record store in the area was selling mix-tape cassettes with music made by local bands.<sup data-fn=\"75aefc4d-5666-4641-934b-9f78f6ae295a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#75aefc4d-5666-4641-934b-9f78f6ae295a\" id=\"75aefc4d-5666-4641-934b-9f78f6ae295a-link\">2<\/a><\/sup>  The reporter, Karen Boots, writes that the store owners expressed that \u201c[Muncie] musicians needed an outlet and many [artists] deserved to be recorded.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"1c436bc2-9e7b-47fa-a969-50d13d9cfd3f\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#1c436bc2-9e7b-47fa-a969-50d13d9cfd3f\" id=\"1c436bc2-9e7b-47fa-a969-50d13d9cfd3f-link\">3<\/a><\/sup>  Mix-tapes offered people across the country, not just those with prior connections to the music industry, the opportunity to share their art with the world.\u00a0Mix-tapes and cassettes not only helped individual bands and artists, but they\u2019re credited with launching the hip hop genre, one of the most popular and influential music genres in American history. As quoted in <em>Unspooled: How the Cassette Made Music Shareable<\/em>, DJ Bobbito Garcia says, \u201cCassettes <em>were<\/em> hip hop [&#8230;].\u201d<sup data-fn=\"892f5d3f-c7b0-4cb3-9402-9816cc42411e\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#892f5d3f-c7b0-4cb3-9402-9816cc42411e\" id=\"892f5d3f-c7b0-4cb3-9402-9816cc42411e-link\">4<\/a><\/sup>  Many hip hop artists got launched their careers off from the success of their mix-tapes.
