Frame 1: Slide with “Crash Test Dummies – Their Impact” by Haley Denehy, Nick Bass and Kevin Bach
Frame 2: Compilation of crash test examples (dramatic music will be played over the top with the crashes still able to be heard): This frame shows the dummies in action “Crash Test Dummy I Didn’t Know That” Youtube video. 2:21. Posted by “National Geographic”. April 9th 2013. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vDQm0qIYi0
Frame 3: Cut to the Haley and Nick “Crash test dummies save lives” and then it fades to black
Frame 4: 1997 fades in the screen and back out when Nick enters the frame
Frame 5: “In 1997, the Hybrid III crash test dummy, made by gm, became the standard for all crash test dummies during testing.” More information will be given about this
Frame 6: The next date will fade into the frame
Frame 7: Nick will continue to speak about each date and example
EX: The part of the documentary I personally will be addressing is the timeline of Crash Test Dummies. When going over the timeline we are going to try to implant the dates on the screen while I will funnel out facts based on the date. For example; the date “1997” may come across the screen and I would give the information about the test dummy that was prevalent during this date, therefore I’d say “In 1997, the Hybrid III crash test dummy, made by gm, became the standard for all crash test dummies during testing.” These dates will give the viewer the knowledge of when exactly the technological advancements were and why they were important. This also allows us to somewhat bring the whole project together, since it is all essentially on one timeline. The timeline goes through all of the antecedents of the dummy and also how the dummy became the measurement tool it is today
Frame 8: Fading into the frame will be a slide that says “Antecedents”
Frame 9: Kevin will return to the frame and speak about the antecedents prior to the Hybrid III. There will be examples of animals and human cadavers and how they have evolved.
EX: I will address the antecedents that came before the Hybrid III crash test dummy. I will talk about the animals used and how scientists used human cadavers as early test dummies before the Hybrid III. I will then address how the test dummies were essentially modelled after mannequins. I will then go into the background of why we need crash test dummies in order to test auto vehicles safety measures
Frame 10: Kevin will be cut from the frame and there will be a short video Inside IIHS: Crash Test Dummies at Work” YouTube video. 2:27. Posted by IIHS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0-gOi6ZtwM (this video talks about the types of dummies starting at about 50 seconds) It will serve as an introduction to the impact and importance
Frame 11: Haley enters the frame and introduces their impact
EX: Crash test dummies are engineered to be most like humans, they give us a good idea of how a crash will injure the human. From the front, side, or rear, it is possible to see how a crash impacts children or adults based on the impacts sustained, because the dummies usually have similar responses. In the 1930’s the automobile death toll was featured in a major piece of dramatic journalism .JC Furnas’ article “And Sudden Death” sparked the National Safety Council to approach the automobile industry for financial support to work on prevention projects. Since then, there have been many tests completed to help change the types of dummies and to continue to build on the safety of vehicles. For example, there are now star rating systems in place; these ranks from one to five, with five being the highest safety rating and one being the lowest. These star ratings are required by federal law, and every year each new vehicle is tested for front, side, and rear impacts and given a star rating.
Frame 12: Haley is cut and Nick and Kevin are in the frame “Thank you so much for watching our documentary on Crash Test Dummies! If you would like more information, please visit our website!” This then fades
Frame 13: Credits scroll across the screen and ends with the website URL across the screen https://historyoftech.mcclurken.org/crashtest/
