In the primary source titled: A History of Headphones: How the Technology Has Evolved, by Georgia Wells, the progression of headphone-like technology into the development of what we know today as modern headphones are explained in a text-based timeline. The article begins by explaining the initial idea of headphones, which stems from telephone switchboard operators using first generation headphones with quarter inch jacks to answer and direct calls.

Over a century later, Willard Meeker, an engineer with RCA, built earmuffs that incorporated noise-cancellation. This set the vision that headphone technology used in the aerospace business could prove profitable in United States and global markets.

The timeline concludes by emphasizing the innovations made by Apple, explaining their most recent move to eliminate the headphone jack. Apple has also revolutionized a new style of headphones, known as Airpods – quality, subtle, and wireless headphones.
