Styrofoam: A Modern Material Revolution Invented in 1941 by Ray McIntire at Dow Chemical, Styrofoam technically expanded polystyrene (EPS) transformed insulation and packaging. Made of 95% air, it’s lightweight, durable, moisture-resistant, and an excellent
thermal insulator. From protecting delicate goods to insulating buildings and even floating boats, Styrofoam became a symbol of post-war innovation though its environmental impact has since inspired a new generation of sustainable
alternatives.
